Version 7.0
Released December 5th, 2024
This is the biggest and most ambitious Cascable update in the app’s history! See our Cascable 7 blog post for more details on all the new features.
Cascable Comes to the Mac
Cascable now has a fully-native Mac version containing nearly all of the features of the iOS app (with the notable exception of geotagging and support for Phase One cameras), and some features unique to the Mac!
Video Recording
Cascable can now record videos with supported Canon, Nikon, and Sony cameras, and import video files from Canon and Nikon cameras.
New Remote Control Features
-
Cascable’s live view pipeline is now hardware accelerated with Apple’s Metal technology, bringing efficiency improvements and better battery life.
-
Added support for Picture in Picture, allowing Cascable to run in the background for longer periods of time while live view is running.
-
You can now import 3D LUT files and apply them to the live view feed.
-
Added the option to use MetalFX upscaling to improve the clarity of the live view feed.
-
Added “Negative Mode”, which inverts the live view feed to aid digitising negatives.
-
Added onion skinning, allowing you to either choose an overlay manually or have the app automatically overlay the last taken photo.
Other Remote Control Improvements
-
The remote control settings menu has been revamped to be better organised and easier to navigate.
-
The toolbar can now be locked to the bottom of the window on iPad and Mac.
-
Improved live view grid options.
-
Shutter Robot will no longer disengage if a camera setting changes. This is particularly useful for Sony cameras, which could cause Shutter Robot to disengage very frequently.
Integration with Photos
- Cascable can now connect to the system Photos library as a “first class” storage location. That means you can copy photos to it directly from another other location, and target it for automated transfers with Storage Links. You can optionally pick a target album for copied images, and make multiple connections to different albums.
Tethering Improvements
-
Added support for “true tethering” for Canon and Nikon cameras in the form of supporting shooting directly into Cascable with the “Image Destination” property - the camera’s own storage can be skipped entirely if desired.
-
Storage Links can now be added to cameras that don’t allow access to their storage card(s) (or don’t have any inserted). This means images can be redirected to alternative locations (such as external storage) when shooting tethered. This is particularly useful for Sony cameras.
Other File Management Improvements
-
You can now rate photos and videos directly on Canon cameras.
-
You can now see a file’s “protected” status right in the image grid, and filter/sort by the same.
-
Added an “Any positive rating” filter to the image grid.
-
Thumbnails can now be shown at their natural aspect ratio as well as square.
-
Added a number of keyboard shortcuts and context menus to improve the image management workflow on all platforms.
-
When tapping on a photo to preview it directly from a camera’s storage card, a histogram won’t be shown if Photo Review → Show Histogram is turned off in Cascable’s settings.
-
Stale thumbnails should now no longer be shown after formatting a camera’s card(s) when the camera is set to reset file names when formatting.
Recipes
-
Added a “Comment” block to leave notes to yourself or others in your recipes.
-
Added a Set Exposure Setting block that lets you directly set an exposure setting to a desired value.
-
Added a “Wait Until Time” block to pause a recipe until the given “real” time.
-
Added an “Until Time” option to the “Repeat” block to repeat a set of blocks until the given “real” time.
-
Added “Start Video Recording” and “Stop Video Recording” blocks.
-
Added an optional HTTP API to the “Wait for Input” block.

Improvements
-
Added support for tap-to-focus and live view zoom on newer Sony cameras.

-
Fixed a problem affecting newer Sony cameras (RX100 V, a6500, A9, etc) that haven’t updated the on-camera “Smart Remote Control” app using the on-camera “PlayMemories Camera Apps” app. Cascable will now correctly refuse to connect to these cameras with instructions to update the camera’s software, instead of connecting then immediately throwing errors about Live View. For more information on updating your camera’s “Smart Remote Control” app, see the help section of the Cascable website, or the in-app Sony connection guide.

Both subscriptions have free trials available to make it even easier to see what Cascable has to offer.
If you’ve purchased any feature packs in a previous version of Cascable, they’ll continue to work in Cascable 3.0 and you’ll be able to upgrade to Cascable at a discounted rate, or completely free if you previously purchased a Full Unlock.

Major New Feature: Greatly Improved RAW Display
iOS 10 brings with it greatly improved RAW support, which means Cascable gets to join in the fun! If you’re running a modern iOS device with iOS 10, Cascable now displays supported RAW files with an increased color depth and quality, which looks great on all devices but it really shines on devices supporting the Display P3 extended color gamut like the 9.7” iPad Pro!
Major New Feature: Quick Proof
Introducing a new feature we’re really excited about: Quick Proof! With Quick Proof, you can apply adjustments to your images within Cascable for exporting and sharing. Currently, Cascable has the following adjustments: Exposure, Highlight and Shadow recovery, White Balance, Contrast, Saturation, Sharpen and Vignette. Quick Proof also works with our new RAW renderer, meaning you have deep color, full resolution RAW editing right on your iOS device! We’re really looking forward to seeing what sort of mobile workflows this feature unlocks for our users. Quick Proof requires iOS 10 and a modern iOS device - iPhone 6 or iPad Air 2 or higher. For detailed information, please see the Cascable 2.1 blog post on our website.

- Be a straightforward self-timer.
You can configure every aspect of Shutter Robot to get exactly the results you need.
Other Improvements to Remote Control
Remote control has been spruced up a bit, and has the following new features:
-
Focus peaking! When your camera is set to manual focus, you can enable focus peaking to help with your focusing.
-
Grid configuration! The grid can now be customised to your liking.
-
Locking shutter! Tap the shutter control with two fingers to lock it open. Great for bulb photography. Tap again to unlock.
-
Viewfinder shutoff! On supported cameras, you can disable the viewfinder image completely. This doesn’t sound very exciting, but it helps when working with photographs that have critical timing and it saves battery life to boot.
Improvements to File Handling
Working with files on your camera is much more powerful:
-
Batch selection! Select one or more files on your camera and delete or download them all at once.
-
Quick Select! Tap “Quick Select” and you can quickly select all, none, or some of your files. Want to copy all of your RAW files taken in past week? You can do this is a few taps!
Cascable tries really hard to make sure you don’t delete files from your camera by mistake. However, if you really want it to, it will delete every single photo from your camera. Please delete responsibly!
Minor Fixes and Additions

Saving photos to your device’s Camera Roll now works correctly if you try to save more than 2-3 photos at once, and allows you to cancel the save operation mid-flight.
-
Cascable now correctly deals with cameras set to expose in half-stops rather than the default of exposing in thirds.
-
Files mode now knows when files are protected and won’t allow you to delete them.
-

-
Green buttons and text now dim correctly with the rest of the UI when bringing up a popover.

Fixed a rare case where the built-in timer’s voice would count down “Three… one… one…”. It’s been taught how to count properly.

Greatly increased the readability of the remote control UI, particularly when the orientation of the viewfinder doesn’t match that of your device (say, a landscape viewfinder on a portrait iPhone).
-
The histogram is now more accurate.
-
Fixed a rare case where the viewfinder image in remote control mode would jump to the top left of the screen.
